Finally the green light. The 12th edition of the Route du rhum got its big start on Wednesday, November 9, off Saint-Malo. The single-handed transatlantic sailing race takes the direction of Pointe-à-Pitre, in Guadeloupe. 138 skippers, divided into six categories, will cover 6,560 kilometers and have until December 4 to arrive.

The eight competitors in the Ultimate class will try to break the record set in 2018 by defending champion Francis Joyon (7 days, 14 hours and 21 minutes), unless he beats it himself. On his ship IDEC Sport, his main rivals will be François Gabart (SVR-Lazartigue), Charles Caudrelier (Maxi Edmond de Rothschild) and Armel Le Cléac’h (Maxi Banque Populaire XI).

As a reminder, the big start was initially scheduled for Sunday, November 6, but the deterioration of the weather conditions had led the organization to postpone it for three days.
