At TAO

In the heart of the upper town, perched on the sides of the ramparts of the citadel, offering a breathtaking view of the bay: “Chez Tao”. A place that has become legendary: a myth that owes less to the striking beauty of the site than to the exceptional atmosphere that reigns there.

His history

In 1925, Tao Khan Bey Kerefoff and his troupe, huge Caucasian dancers, landed in Calvi, in the wake of Prince Youssoupof. Maddening equestrian aerobatics on the beach, bewitching songs, frenzied dances.

Tao Khan immediately fell in love with Calvi: “It’s like the Caucasus, I want, I have to live there”.

Tao Khan at the opportunity to purchase the Giubega Palace. He accommodates his troop there, transforms the cellars into stables for his horses.

In 1934, the former lieutenant of the imperial guard who had become a principal dancer met a 16-year-old girl, Jeannette Maestracci, who would give her 4 children: Zalim was born in 1942, Tao By in 1944, Jean-Témir in 1945 and Lena in 1952. .

In the meantime, in 1935, “Chez Tao” opened its doors. Instantly the legend takes off.

Tao By spent his childhood and adolescence, eyes and ears riveted on the bar-cabaret room. He observes, gives his hand behind the counter, drinks this permanent fiesta. He discovers the piano. Learn to play it almost on your own. The kid is a born, gifted musician.

We find him in Paris from the age of 19. At Patachou precisely, where he accompanies his beginner balanin friend, Michel Mallory. In this famous Montmartre cabaret, he befriends everything that matters or would count on the big stages of show biz.

In 1966, Tao By was noticed by the Polydor record company and recorded two 45s. Call to military duty for two years, everything has to be redone.

It is at this moment that the artist meets a still unknown singer, with whom he will play and binge between 1969 and 1973, Michel Sardou.

Tao By then decides to take the controls of a piano bar, Rue Mermoz in Paris. But the call of his land is the strongest. In 1985, he returned home, to Tao’s, in Calvi.

Few pianists, singers, nightclub animators have the extraordinary power of Tao, his know-how.

Jacques Higelin, Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg, Michel Sardou, Johnny Hallyday, Jacques Dutronc, Guy Bedos, Carlos, Michel Petrucciani, Enrico Macias, M, Izia, Thomas Dutronc and many others from here or elsewhere, shared the microphone or the piano of our prestigious guest.

Up there, in the citadel, the sun always rises too early.

“Live happy today because tomorrow it will be too late”
