In 1951, two years after the revolution that brought him to power, Mao discovered the small seaside resort of Beidahe. Formerly prized by wealthy people close to the old Chinese regime, it is one of the few seaside resorts in China to benefit from tourism infrastructures (hotels, villas, shops, etc.).

Over time, Mao and his successors at the head of the Chinese CP will make it a place of political meetings and a place of absolute power.
