The BEI will investigate a fatal incident involving the SQ in Lanaudière

The investigation into an incident involving police officers from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) which killed two civilians on Tuesday evening in Lanaudière was entrusted to the Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI).

Preliminary information communicated to the BEI indicates that around 8:30 p.m., SQ police officers saw two noisy vehicles on Route 348, near Saint-Béatrix Road, in Saint-Ambroise-de-Kildare. They reportedly noticed that one of the vehicles had a fake license plate.

The police would then have turned around to intercept the suspect vehicle, but its driver would have accelerated suddenly before colliding with a moped.

After the impact, the driver of the moped and a passenger in the vehicle that was being chased were seriously injured.

Both men were later declared dead.

Five BEI investigators were tasked with investigating the circumstances of the event. A parallel investigation has been entrusted to the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), which will also act as a support police service.
