The BEI opens an investigation into an arrest in Sherbrooke

(Sherbrooke) The Independent Investigations Bureau (BEI) has launched a review to shed light on the circumstances of a police intervention involving the Sherbrooke Police Service (SPS).

A young man of 18 strongly intoxicated and in crisis was arrested Monday by the police, according to a statement transmitted by the BEI. The man was allegedly involved in a collision with vehicles parked on Magloire Street in Sherbrooke.

The BEI indicates that the man allegedly assaulted at least one resident of the area. Before the police arrived, he also allegedly tried to attack a first responder from the Sherbrooke fire protection service.

According to the statement, the man collapsed on the ground before being handcuffed by the police. An ambulance was called to the scene and transported the young man to a hospital where he remains in stable condition.

The parallel investigation into this arrest and the circumstances that led to it has been entrusted to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), which will also act as a support police service. The SQ will provide a reconstitutionist who will work under the supervision of the BEI investigators.

According to information from the SQ, the investigation initiated by the Major Crimes Investigation Service aims to determine the history of events preceding the arrest of the 18-year-old young man.
