The Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI) has launched an investigation into the death of a 52-year-old man during a police intervention by the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) on Sunday evening in Rimouski, in Bas-Saint-Laurent.
SQ police were called shortly before 8 p.m. to intervene with a visibly disorganized man lying on the ground in a public place.
When the police arrived, the 50-year-old had already left the scene, before being located later inside the apartment building where he lives.
When the police were trying to arrest him, the man allegedly fell down a staircase in the building, according to the BEI.
The 50-year-old was transported in serious condition to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the BEI said.
Five BEI investigators have been assigned to investigate the exact circumstances surrounding this event, it was added.
