(Los Angeles) The action film The Beekeeper was released on Sunday at the top of the North American box office during a winter weekend with rather modest revenues, according to estimates from the specialist firm Exhibitor Relations.
For its third week in theaters, the film from Amazon/MGM studios collected $7.4 million in American and Canadian cinemas from Friday to Sunday, according to Exhibitor.
In The Beekeepera former military member of the special forces, now a beekeeper (Jason Statham), wants revenge on a mysterious group whose cruel scams led to the suicide of an elderly woman (Phylicia Rashad).
According to an analyst from Franchise Entertainment Research, David Gross, the film, projected for 40 million dollars in revenue, could ultimately earn 150 million in total worldwide, “a success”, according to him. “We are not facing a classic action thriller, these films disappear quickly,” he adds.
Beekeeper slightly ahead of the musical Mean Girls, adapted from the eponymous film released in 2004, and which brought in $7.3 million in revenue after dominating the box office for two weekends in a row. Produced by Paramount, the musical is based on the story of high school girls who made the success of the first version, which became cult in the United States.
The eccentric chocolatier Wonkaplayed by Timothée Chalamet, has garnered 5.9 million and has not left the podium since its release in North America on December 15.
Followed in fourth place by the animated film Migration (Universal), which collected 5.2 million this weekend, for a total of more than 100 million in North America, and the romantic comedy Anyone But Youwith $4.8 million from Friday to Sunday.
