Cartoonists Axelle Lenoir, Julie Doucet and Catherine Ocelot are among the finalists for the Bédélys prizes, awarded in May as part of the Montreal Comics Festival. Women largely dominate the list of 35 finalists.
Only Grégoire Bouchard (survivors of eternity) was among the five finalists at Bédélys Québec. The other artists in the running for this prestigious prize are: Boum (A jellyfish), Catherine Ocelot (Symptoms), Julie Doucet (Time Zone J) and Cab (UTown).
The Bédélys awarding the best children’s album also has a good chance of ending up in the hands of a cartoonist: Axelle Lenoir (If we were…, volume 2), Caroline Soucy (Polar Pol, volume 2)Genevieve Bigue (Sometimes the lakes burn) are effect in the race. The other two finalists are veteran Rémy Simard (Queen Babette) and Guillaume Perreault (The space factor, volume 3).
The very beautiful album The little brother by Jean-Louis Tripp (known among others for the series General store) is a finalist for the Foreign Bédélys.
The unveiling of the winners will take place on May 25 during the opening night of the Festival BD de Montréal. Co-founded by bookseller François Mayeux, this event has been held every spring since 2012.
