Nicolas, an anonymous athlete, will have the honor of being an Olympic torch relay thanks to his father who registered him to thank him for saving his life with an organ donation.

Nicolas crossed half of France to break the news himself to his father Claude. It’s a surprise visit. “I have something to tell you. Apparently someone applied for me to be a flamebearer, and I was accepted.” His father registered him with the hope of seeing him as a torchbearer, and it happened: “It takes heart. Nicolas, thank you!”

Encourage organ donation

This thank you is the recognition of a father for a son who saved his life. In 2004, Claude suffered from cancer, he was condemned, but his son decided to give him part of his liver. Twenty years later, relaying the flame is a sporting adventure, but above all it is a life story. “It symbolizes the passing of the baton, the passing of life, since I gave him my life, what he said to me one day, and he gave it back to me somewhere”, says Claude. Being part of the 10,000 torchbearers is also a way for them to encourage organ donation. A message that they hammer home as a family, traveling across France by bike.
