A blood sausage ending. Sochaux’s fine run in the Coupe de France was interrupted in the round of 16, by a merciless Stade Rennais (1-6), Tuesday February 6. The hope lasted around twenty minutes, time for the Breton attackers to score four times in nineteen minutes. Amine Gouri, from afar (24th), Ibrahim Salah (29th) and Arnaud Kalimuendo, twice (35th and 43rd) from close range, materialized the gap between the two teams. In the second half, Gouiri (47th) and Benjamin Bourigeaud (81st) added to the score, while captain Malcolm Viltard reduced the score with a penalty (64th).
To play against a third resident of Ligue 1 in 2024, after Lorient (2-1) and Reims (2-2, 5-4 on penalties) eliminated in the previous rounds, the Cubs took to the game, faithful to their club’s history in the competition (five finals played, two victories in 1937 and 2007). The return to earth was therefore brutal against Rennes who have been irresistible since the start of the year – four victories in Ligue 1 and a qualification against Marseille in the previous round.
Back to business as usual on Saturday
Under the eyes of several club figures, such as former international midfielder Bernard Genghini, and in a festive atmosphere, their distant heirs were able to measure the progress made since the summer, the club having been threatened with disappearance, before leaving again extremis on August 11, when the season had started. They also saw the gap that separates them from the elite.
