Thursday, July 28, surveillance is required on the beaches to avoid drownings which are caused by very strong sea currents and difficult to identify for swimmers. Lifeguards are on the bridge at La Grande-Motte.

The beaches are very popular during this summer season 2022. To find a little freshness, many people go swimming. However, the risk is indeed real since it is often windy on the beaches of La Grande-Motte (Herault), which causes a strong current that takes bathers offshore. Parents and lifeguards therefore keep a watchful eye for children splashing around. Inflatable water toys pose a hazard because they more easily drag swimmers offshore.

To limit the risks and prevent drowning, lifeguards carry out numerous patrols and sometimes pick up swimmers 300 meters from the coast. The factor to take into account is the wind which often becomes stronger offshore. “The further we go, the stronger the wind since there, we are a little protected by the buildings here too, as soon as we reach 300 meters, the wind is much stronger”reports the head of CRS posts in La Grande-Motte, Sébastien gotta. You also have to be extra careful to avoid jellyfish and the discomfort that can occur with high heat.
