the ban on the demonstration is “irresponsible, dangerous, inappropriate, disproportionate”, according to lawyer Arié Alimi

The lawyer Arié Alimi reacted on franceinfo this Friday to the decision of the prefecture of Savoy to ban the demonstration planned for Saturday against the construction site of the Lyon-Turin railway line.

The decision of the Savoy prefecture to ban the demonstration scheduled for Saturday June 17 against the construction site of the Lyon-Turin railway line “arrival Thursday at 11:30 p.m., is irresponsible, dangerous, unsuitable, disproportionate to the reality of the situation”, estimated Friday on franceinfo Me Arié Alimi, lawyer for EELV, Attac and the association Vivre et Agir en Maurienne, which are among the organizations calling for demonstrations. The appeal, filed with the administrative court of Grenoble against the decree of the prefecture, was rejected Friday evening shortly before 8 p.m.

“There is nothing to suggest any risk of harm to public order”says Arie Alimi. “Freedom of movement and the freedom to demonstrate are severely hampered by these decrees”.

The lawyer denounces “the custom of the State and the prefectures to prevent and publish banning orders the day before demonstrations” and points to “a very large number of banning orders to demonstrate.” He judges that “each time, risks of violence are alleged by the prefectures”. But according to him, “they are never substantiated”.

No violent intention on the part of NGOs, according to the lawyer

Arié Alimi recalls that the organizers of the demonstration, “the eleven NGOs, associations” and in particular the “political parties which are in Parliament, and which have chosen the democratic path of dialogue and non-violence, have absolutely no violent intentions”.

The lawyer considers that the fact that the association Les Uprisings of the Earth is among the organizers “is not a valid argument” to ban the demonstration. The government has “the firm intention of being able to present to the Council of Ministers” June 21st “dissolution file” of the movement, recalled its spokesperson, Olivier Véran, on Wednesday. “That there are organizations that join a demonstration, does not justify the ban”according to Arie Alimi. “Otherwise, there would never be any more demonstrations, since there are always organizations, which the State accuses of wanting to commit violence, which participate in all the demonstrations. That would simply mean never organizing any more demonstrations. demonstrations”.
