Americans are not only fans of pizza and burgers, they also love guacamole. A recipe based on avocados, most often imported from Mexico. But since February 12, none of these green fruits have crossed the border.
Thousands of lawyers are now stuck at the border between Mexico and the United States. After threats made against one of the American inspectors from the Department of Agriculture visiting Mexico, Washington has just banned the import of the green fruit on its territory. Yet Mexico is the main supplier to the United States: 8 out of 10 avocados come from the Michoacán region west of Mexico City.
With this ban, customers fear a price increase. Over the past year, demand has exploded in the United States. A ban of only two weeks could therefore lead to shortages and impact the entire production chain according to experts. In Mexico, the fruit that is nicknamed “green gold” represents three billion dollars. It is a flourishing business that attracts the greed of the cartels.
