welcome aboard

Q: I’ll soon be an adult and like most kids my age, I’m starting to think about my first car. I’m looking for a car that will be reliable, economical and easy to maneuver around town, but that can also be fun and exciting to drive. What model do you suggest? – Etienne P.

A: You list many criteria, but you give no indication of how much money you have. Also, for a first vehicle, it is also important to take into account the cost of replacement parts, but also that of insurance. Among the choices to consider, there are safe bets (Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic), but also vehicles that benefit, for example, from generous warranties that you could always benefit from (Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, even Mitsubishi Lancer). The most fun to drive of the bunch? The Civic, by far. You could also consider the Mazda3.

2019 Infiniti QX50

Q: I have a 2019 Infiniti QX50. My lease ends in July 2023 and I will have approximately 35,000 km on the clock at that time. The residual value is $24,000. Should I buy it or put it back? I’ve never had a problem and I’m happy with it. Your opinion ? – Mark C.

A: Your vehicle is practically new, you are satisfied with it and the asking price is lower than the market price. Keep it !

2018 Volkswagen Beetle convertible

Q: When I retire next month, I plan to buy a used convertible. I do little mileage: about 8000 km per year. My budget is around $20,000. I would prefer an automatic transmission and a four-seater. What do you recommend ? -Chantal M.

A: Assuming this will be your only vehicle, why not treat yourself to a used Volkswagen Beetle? It looks more reliable and less expensive to maintain than a Mini Cooper. Unfortunately for you, this category is slowly dying out and the choice is not very abundant. And last tip, wait until fall to get a better price.

Porsche Cayenne Coupe

Q: I would like your comments on the Maserati Levante Gran Lusso compared to the Porsche Cayenne coupé, particularly in terms of resale value and reliability after three or four years. – Paul P.

A: Two very capable, very distinctive SUVs you have there. For exclusivity, the Maserati Levante is second to none. On the other hand, to meet your criteria (resale value and reliability), the Porsche Cayenne is the best choice. And if your wallet doesn’t wince, the hybrid version is the most interesting to consider. Finally, note that this vehicle is undergoing a partial overhaul this year. A full testbed will be released in the coming weeks.
