A big challenge! Despite the controversy, Maïwenn has decided to bet on Johnny Depp for his latest film called “Jeanne du Barry” presented at the Cannes Film Festival this Tuesday, May 16, 2023. On screen, the happy father of two children took pleasure in embodying Louis XV. He thus gives the reply to the director who plays the role of his sulphurous mistress. On the Croisette, the duo and the rest of the cast kept the photographers’ flashes crackling.
On the day of the screening at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, Johnny Depp also received a seven-minute standing ovation. However, his remarkable appearance at this renowned event is not unanimous. A few months ago, the artist hit the headlines because of his trial for “defamation” which opposed him to his ex-girlfriend Amber Heard. Accused of domestic violence by the actress, the latter felt boycotted by the Hollywood industry. In the eyes of justice, the actor was not recognized “not guilty” on this ground, as certain feminist organizations have pointed out.

Ignoring the critics, Maïwenn and Johnny Depp took several months to box the historic feature film. “When I met him (Johnny Depp editor’s note), he already knew a lot about the history of France […]confided the ex-girlfriend of Luc Besson during a press conference. He knows French cinema, painting, music […]. He knew a lot more about Louis XV than I did. And then when I met him, it was obvious […]. I really fell in love with him…“
To embody the famous monarch, Johnny Depp was also coached: “I knew I had to focus on the language, the pronunciation. I couldn’t use sentences that I usually like like ‘I have the ass lined with noodles’, it doesn’t work in the mouth of Louis XV! I tried to be as precise as possible, to concentrate.” Despite his basics, the musician had to surpass himself to be convincing in front of the camera: “I had an incredible, very diligent, patient French coach, Mathilde, who twisted my mouth all over the place in a very strange way! But I still like her. It was fun. I had the right to a lot of help. Maybe they felt sorry for me!“
