Faced with the rising cost of living, the best way to save money would be to avoid spending a fortune to acquire symbols of social success.
At least that’s what Jean-Sébastien Marsan, author of the book “Liberate yourself through deconsumption,” thinks. According to him, the big, over-equipped house with an in-ground pool or the brand-new luxury car are nice to have, but are not necessities.
“A smaller house, which is not over-equipped, which corresponds better to our budget, fulfills its function, that is to say to house us,” he said in an interview on LCN .
The art of practicing deconsumption is to systematically review all aspects of our lives, from consumption to work to leisure, explained Mr. Marsan.
“Deconsumption can be a good way to save, invest and achieve financial autonomy, which we cannot do if we are always overconsuming and getting into debt,” said he added, specifying that this way of saving at the start of one’s working life allows one to have freedom of choice later.
