The attack caused a stir in Germany. The German anti-terrorist prosecution will take up the investigation against the alleged perpetrator of a knife attack on Friday in the center of Mannheim, which cost the life of a police officer and left five injured, a spokesperson at AFP. She justified this support by “special importance” of the affair.

Wounded by a police officer, the main suspect, a 25-year-old Afghan who arrived in Germany in 2014, had to undergo surgery and could not be questioned at this stage, according to the latest police statements. The young man attacked several members of an anti-Islam movement in the market square of this town in the west of the country. He is suspected of murder, attempted murder in five cases and serious bodily harm, according to the spokesperson.

The handling by the anti-terrorist prosecution was widely expected after the Islamist trail had been mentioned several times by the government. Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke of“attack” and Finance Minister Christian Lindner called for defense against “Islamist terrorism”.
