The anthem of Iranian protest broadcast at the White House

(Washington) Jill and Joe Biden broadcast the anthem of protest in Iran on Monday at the White House, in support of women and girls in the country.

A video of Iranian singer Shervin Hajipour singing the song Baraye was broadcast before the American president and his wife arrived in the room where their guests were waiting for them on the occasion of the celebration of Nowruz, the Persian New Year.

Joe Biden praised in a short speech the “women of Iran who are fighting for their rights and their freedoms”.

“I want to tell the young girls and women of Iran: your song resonates in our hearts,” said Jill Biden.

Baraye is considered the anthem of the protest triggered in Iran by the death in September of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who had been arrested by the morality police.

The first lady of the United States had already awarded a special Grammy on February 6 to this piece by the 25-year-old Iranian pop singer.

Shervin Hajipour was taken into custody after his song went viral on social media, then released on bail.
