The announcement made to Marie operated in Nantes and Angers

For his first opera, the composer Philippe Leroux sets his sights on an authentic “mystery”: this is indeed the presentation The Annunciation made to Mary
described by Paul Claudel as a “drama of the possession of a soul by the supernatural”.

Paul Claudel, whose work is inseparable from his Christian faith, here revisits the figure of the Virgin. Philippe Leroux and Célie Pauthe wanted to summon Claudel himself on stage. The first by recreating his voice which, as melodic as rocky, mingles at times with that of the performers, the second by plunging the drama back into his native Tardenois. In this score that is both intimate and dizzying, the composer gives life to what Claudel called an “opera de parole”, a dialogue between drama and poetry, between sound and signifier, between voice and breath.
