Since the start of the fires in Gironde, several hundred animals from the zoo in the Arcachon basin have been evacuated to be protected from the flames. Some of them have found refuge at the Beauval zoo (Loir-et-Cher).

They are weakened, but saved from the flames: 370 animals were evacuated from the zoo in the Arcachon basin on Tuesday July 19, when the fumes risked seriously intoxicating them. They were welcomed in about twenty zoological parks, such as that of Beauval (Loir-et-Cher). Several dozen healers have volunteered to help them.

“They were locked in small cages for 24 hours, everyone came to check them regularly in the front light so it was quite stressful for them”, explains Lucie Brisson, veterinarian of the zooparc of Beauval. Despite the precautions, 14 animals did not survive the transport. The largest mammals, such as elephants and giraffes, could not make the trip from the Arcachon basin zoo because of their weight.
