Saturday, August 6, the zoo of La Teste-de-Buch, in Gironde, has reopened its doors. Three weeks ago, hundreds of animals threatened by the flames had to leave the place urgently in order to be sheltered

Barely the gates opened, visitors flocked to the La Teste-de-Buch zoo (Gironde), Saturday August 6. After three weeks of closure due to forest fires, everyone was impatient. A forced break in the middle of the summer season. As the fire approached, 370 animals were urgently evacuated.

The largest animals had to stay put, despite the smoke. “During the time of the evacuation, they were locked in the buildings. To prevent them from being exposed to smoke, we had sealed all the openings with damp cloths”, explains Élodie Trunet, veterinarian. The first visitors were delighted with this reunion. “You have to support them and be present, even if a few animals are missing”, says a tourist. About sixty animals have not yet found their place. They will be back at the zoo in the next few days.
