After the devastating floods which left several thousand dead, it is time for questions and anger, particularly in Derna, a town which was ravaged by floods. Residents are demanding explanations from local authorities.

After the deadly floods in Libya, residents are angry and demanding explanations. At the heart of the questions is the question of the two dams which failed under the torrential rains. “The rupture of these two dams (…) caused a veritable wall of water to surge over the town of 100,000 inhabitants, which explains the extent of the damage.”details Antoine Fenaux, journalist at France 24.

Derna City Council dissolved

These dams were cracked due to lack of maintenance, corruption, political obstacles in a Libya more divided than ever. On site, the risk of an epidemic has become very significant. In front of the city mosque in Derna, demonstrators denounce the inaction of the authorities. A few hours after the demonstration, the anger seemed to have been heard. The Derna municipal council was dissolved and an investigation was opened.
