The Amur panther
She lives between Russia, North Korea and China and takes its name from the Amur River which flows between Russia and China, where she lives.
The Amur panther has an orange-yellow coat with fairly spaced black ocelli (spots) which differentiates it from other leopards. Like our fingerprints, each individual has different ocelli.
She has one quite thick fura very long tail. She has one slender figure which allows it to easily climb trees. Its long tail serves as a pendulum, which allows it to hide its prey high up. That way, she’s the only one who can get them back. She is therefore sure not to have them stolen!
The Amur Panther is one of the most endangered species
In nature, there are about fifty individuals. There are more Amur leopards in captivity than in the wild, unfortunately.
If it is in critical danger of extinction today, it is due to the reduction of its habitat. 90% of its habitat has been reduced because of cultures etc. It is hunted for its fur and also for medicinal virtues, according to traditional Chinese medicine.
Suyiana and Baruto, the Amur panthers of the Auvergne animal park
Suyiana, the female has been in the park a little longer than the male. Baruto is still brand new to the park. He is still discovering his environment.
Suyiana has calmed down a lot. She was stressed at the beginning but now she is very comfortable in her habitat, goes around her enclosure without problem. She can be seen very calm, climbing in trees.
So far, they’re getting to know each other, and it’s going pretty well. the park even hopes for births in the months to come.
To see Suyiana and Baruto, the 2 Amur panthers, direction house number 26 and 27, at the very top of the park, at the Top of the World.
