Britney Spears had a voluntary termination of pregnancy during her relationship with other pop superstar Justin Timberlake between 1999 and 2002, the American singer reveals in her memoirs, according to an extract published Tuesday October 17 by the magazine People. The Woman in Me is due out in the United States on October 24. “If the decision had been mine, I never would have done it,” she wrote there about her abortion, according to the extract published by People. “But Justin was so sure he didn’t want to be a father,” adds the singer, now 41 years old. “Even today, it is one of the most difficult experiences of my life,” she writes.

Britney Spears says she met Justin Timberlake when they were both kids, starring on the Disney TV show The Mickey Mouse Club. The two teenagers began dating several years later, becoming one of the most scrutinized couples in the entertainment industry, before splitting in 2002. Britney Spears has two boys, Sean and Jayden, from a marriage to Kevin Federlin. She was also briefly married – less than three days – to her childhood friend, Jason Alexander.

Britney Spears further described in The Woman in Me her years of fighting against her father to be freed from her guardianship, decided in 2008 due to psychological disorders. This guardianship, judged “abusive” by the singer, notably prevented her, according to her, from removing her contraceptive IUD despite her desire to have other children. Nearly fourteen years later, and at the end of a high-profile legal saga, a Los Angeles court lifted the guardianship in November 2021 to allow him to regain control of his personal life. “I think now about my father and his associates having control over my body and my money for so long, and it makes me sick,” writes Britney Spears in her memoir.

In August, her third husband Sam Asghari filed for divorce after 14 months of marriage. The couple had announced a month before their union in June 2022 that the singer had suffered a miscarriage.
