The American Presidency and Ageism

While listening to and watching the entire televised debate involving Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, I asked myself the question, quite legitimately, I think: Is Donald Trump in his right mind? Disjointed, incoherent, vulgar and mendacious remarks came abundantly from the mouth of the former president; his look also often seemed strange to me.

It was noted not long ago that President Biden seemed lost and spoke quite often incoherently, which precipitated his resignation for a second term as president.

I don’t want to be called an ageist, but perhaps there should be an age limit for becoming president. I’m thinking 75. If a senator in Canada has to resign at 75, which is a slightly lighter duty than that of an American president, perhaps we should consider putting an age limit on that presidency. But I doubt very much that such a limit would be accepted in the United States. People would immediately cry age discrimination. But at least there should be a serious and recurring independent medical examination of every presidential candidate and every sitting president. Being president seems to me a heavier burden than running a Walmart!
