The ambulance driver who hit and killed two teenagers riding a scooter on Monday evening in Lyon was taken into police custody, franceinfo learned on Tuesday August 23 from a police source. According to another police source, confirming information from RTL, he has a heavy record, including 28 traffic offenses in his name.

The 36-year-old paramedic was driving with a probationary license on which he only had two points left out of eight. He had his first driving license revoked in 2019 after losing all his points. The national driving license system lists 28 traffic offenses to its name, such as excessive speeds and crossing white lines. He was also known to the police for lack of insurance and driving a vehicle of a category higher than that authorized by his licence.

According to the first elements of the investigation, the ambulance was traveling in a bus lane when it struck from behind the two teenagers traveling on a rental electric scooter, at the corner of rue de Condé and the quai du Marshal Joffre, in the second arrondissement of Lyon. The victims, a 17-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl together, were thrown several meters.

According to six witnesses on the spot, the ambulance was traveling at very high speed. Some have declared that she had activated her siren and flashing light, but others contradict this version. The ambulance driver was first hospitalized in shock, like his fellow passenger, before being taken into custody. Drug and alcohol tests on him came back negative.
