The Montreal Alouettes sent a serious message to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but it was insufficient to win, as the locals posted a 31-21 victory.
For the first time this season, the Bombers (11-1) allowed more than one touchdown at home, where the Alouettes (6-6) scored three: that of Jamal Davis II in a fumble recovery and brought down over 19 yards, as well as those of Reggie White Jr. – his career first – and the 10e of the season from Jake Wieneke, who temporarily gave the visitors a 21-14 lead early in the third quarter.
But the Bombers aren’t the powerhouse of the CFL by accident. Three possessions later, they tied for the 24-yard pass from Zach Collaros to the forgotten Drew Wolitarsky on the left. On their last possession of the third quarter, the locals approached the Alouettes’ 2-line, from which Sean McGuire snuck in to score his 10.e rushing touchdown of the season, the highest total in the CFL.
Those seven points after the conversion were scored early in the fourth quarter, in which the Bombers have dominated 113-6 in scores since the start of the season. This explains that.
Nic Demski scored the Bombers’ first major on a 10-yard pass from Collaros, who had a strong game. Kicker Sergio Castillo, back with the Bombers, made three field goals for 22, 34 and 47 yards, in addition to registering a single after a failed 38-yard attempt.
The Alouettes got the ball back with just under 2:30 to go in the game. Trevor Harris, on his first start with the Alouettes, and the offense were unable to come from behind one last time. With a third down and three yards to go, Harris decided to go for the pass when the Bombers’ defensive front was bare. Evil took him.
His pass to Quan Bray went over the receiver and ended up in the hands of Adam Bighill. Three games later, Castillo nailed the Alouettes’ casket with his third field goal of the game.
In the loss, William Stanback had his sixth 100-yard game of the season with 106 yards on 16 carries, bringing his season tally to 1,066, his second straight season of 1,000 yards or more.
