The aid provided to the victims of La Baie could be improved, says Legault

The Prime Minister, François Legault, says he is evaluating whether it is necessary to improve the assistance programs provided to evacuees in the La Baie sector, in Saguenay, where there is a risk of landslide.

“We know that someone who loses his house in a situation like that is entitled to $260,000, $210,000 for the house and $50,000 for the land, said Mr. Legault, in a press briefing, in Sherbrooke. . But we will see if it is necessary to improve it. The Premier said he was working with Mayor Julie Dufour and the Red Cross to help “all families find housing.”

In all, nearly 200 residents had to leave their homes in the La Baie sector. Evacuations are done “mainly as a preventive measure, but safety is at stake and we must not compromise”, underlined François Legault. “We have people from the Ministry of Transport who are analyzing the soil and also looking to see if there is work that can be done to save a certain number of residences,” he added.

Mr. Legault said he was monitoring the situation “from hour to hour”. “I understand that it’s not funny to be told to leave your house like that quickly,” he said.

Early Monday evening, a city council will be held to adopt a resolution to extend the state of emergency declared by Mayor Dufour for five days.

Further details will follow.
