An agreement was reached in the joint committee on the immigration bill on Tuesday, December 19, after intense negotiations between the Republicans and the majority. “It is not a compromise that has just been established, it is a surrender. They have taken up practically all the measures that the right demanded”says Laurent Joffrin, journalist and former director of Releasein 19/20 info, Tuesday December 19. “This project, if it is voted on, it will be voted for by a Macronist majority, plus the Republicans, plus the National Rally, over a majority of the right/extreme right”he adds.
“The philosophy of the National Rally”
According to him, this situation would pose “a colossal problem for the Macronist left”which would then be “Obligated to say whether it exists or not, because if it stays and is content with a formal protest, that means it goes under the table”. Laurent Joffrin believes that “the philosophy of the project is that of the National Rally”according to which “foreigners are unwelcome in France, they annoy us, so we want to kick them out, or we want to prevent them from coming by dissuading them”.
