“This cannot constitute the only progress for our country which is dying of its centralism”. Guest of franceinfo, Tuesday March 12, Loïg Chesnais-Girard, president of the Brittany region, reacts to the agreement reached between the government and Corsican elected officials on a draft“constitutional writing” providing for the recognition of an autonomous status of the island “within the Republic”.

For him, “the decentralization which is enshrined in the Constitution must take a further step. We are in a period where our country is in a moment where it is worried about its future. Many are in despair of politics. Nationalism is presented as the only new solution.”

“Giving autonomy to local communities”

“I propose something else, it’s another way: trust in local elected officials, from mayors to regions. For that, the Constitution must evolve to allow autonomy to be given to local authorities, to give freedoms news to local communities, to meet the aspirations of the country. This is how the Republic will remain one and indivisible.”he says.

Concretely, he pleads for “a revision of article 73” of the Constitution “which would suggest that communities can organize themselves and propose specific organizations with regard to their characteristic situation and their particular constraints”. For this he wrote “to the President of the Senate” And “to the Minister of the Interior”. It is not about “replace the Corsican situation” but of “to say that we cannot be satisfied with just a Corsican solution”.

The leader of the Les Républicains senators, Bruno Retailleau, denounced Tuesday on his X account “a dangerous step” after the agreement between the government and Corsican elected officials. “Recognizing a historical, linguistic and cultural community amounts to recognizing the notion of the Corsican people”, indicated the boss of the LR group, the leading political force in the Senate. He continued by indicating that this text opened a “Pandora’s box”t that the President of the Senate Gérard Larcher had indeed “received a letter from the president of the Brittany region to request in turn the modification of the Constitution” as “It was to be expected”. “Don’t use Brittany to attack Corsica”replied Loïg Chesnais-Girard on X. “The proposal that I am putting forward is a republican proposal for all territories with strong specificity”he added.
