First test for the immigration bill. This text, defended by the Minister of the Interior, must pass a first obstacle, Monday, December 11, before its examination in the National Assembly: the preliminary rejection motion tabled by environmentalists. An adoption of this motion is not ruled out by Gérald Darmanin. “We have a relative majority. Mathematically, the united oppositions win, so mathematically the motion to reject is adopted this afternoon”recognized the minister on CNews and Europe 1 Monday morning. “That’s classic logic. Now there’s politics. It would be a denial of democracy not to debate immigration”he estimated.

According to him, the motion to reject is “the rejection of the debate”. Gérald Darmanin, who points “the oppositions who don’t think the same at all”would find “Very peculiar” that the LR or the RN cannot “for 15 days debate a subject that fascinates the French, whether they are for or against”.

The minister, however, is counting on minds in the oppositions who are ready to debate and place the deputies face to face with their responsibilities: “If these strong measures are not adopted and, tomorrow, there is a tragedy – a person, who was a criminal or a radicalized foreigner, who could have been expelled thanks to this law and who was not – , what will be the responsibility of parliamentarians who did not even want to debate this subject? It would be enormous.” On RTL, the president of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet (Renaissance) made no secret that she would be very surprised if this rejection motion was adopted. “It would be incomprehensible, the Assembly would shoot itself in the foot”she said.
