The aces of info | Our online “friends”, the ribbon skirt and gender-neutral galas

Are people online really your friends?

Social networks have the power to bring us into contact with a multitude of people. We can even develop friendships with people who share the same interests as us. However, it is important to distinguish between our friends in real life and our “friends” on the internet. But why ? We explain to you.

Influencers… who influence!

Have you ever had the impression of having a friendship with an influencer, an influencer, or even a celebrity that you admire and that you follow on social networks? If so, that would be completely normal. You may have already noticed how in their videos these people often talk to the camera, making it seem like they are interacting directly with you. Almost as if you were their friend! It’s called a relationship parasocial.

It can be fun and entertaining, and some influencers may be role models for you. Maybe they made you join an online community that made you flourish. However, you must remember that their job is not to become your friend. It is, precisely, of youinfluence !

Don’t fall into the trap!

Some people are very fond of following the lives of influencers. Big houses, fancy cars, cute animals, a lot of money… Sometimes it seems like they have a dream life! It’s very impressive, but it can also quickly become absorbing.

Indeed, if we have the impression that these influencers are our “friends”, it is easy to start to find them a lot more interesting than our friends in real life. We then spend more and more time on social networks watching them, and this is how we can fall into an addiction. An addiction is when you do something repeatedly and you can’t help it.

And that’s where it can become a problem: we start to abandon our real friendships, our real relationships. And why ? To find out all about a person you’ll probably never meet, and all that, eyes glued to a screen…

So the solution?

It’s not rocket science: you have to use social networks intelligently! Of course you can watch influencer vlogs. It’s about doing it in moderation! For example, a good strategy to achieve this is to set a maximum screen time per day. The Government of Quebec, moreover, recommends a maximum of two hours for children 5 to 12 years old.

And you, how much time do you spend in front of a screen each day?

From a text by Florence Dancause, The Press

Why wear the ribbon skirt?

Among Aboriginal people, there are several reasons for wearing the ribbon skirt. This is among other things to remind women, girls and people of diverse gender identities that they have the right to be who they are. January 4 was the very first National Ribbon Skirt Day. Did you know that a young girl, Isabella Kulak, is behind this Day? Shushan tell you!

Non-gendered categories in the galas

Pierre-Yves Lord was rewarded at the 37e edition of the Gémeaux Awards Gala, last September.

Do you know the Gemini awards gala? This gala rewards the best TV series in Quebec. There will be no more gendered categories in Gemini. That is to say, there will no longer be categories just for women or just for men. The Brit Awards, which celebrate music artists in the UK, did the same last year. We summarize the situation for you!

From Universal Categories to Gemini

Finished the “best male lead” and the “best female lead”. At the Gemini Awards, these categories simply become “best leading role”.

The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television chooses the gala award categories and nominees.

According to the Academy, the categories were merged because there were too many of them. Before, the Gemini Awards gala had 139 categories. Today, it has 88!

The Academy wanted the gala to be more competitive and make it clear that everyone has a chance to walk away with a trophy.

And in the UK?

For its part, the Brit Awards gala decided in 2022 to combine its “Best Female Artist” and “Best Male Artist” categories into a single category: “Best Artist”.

However, the Brit Awards announced at the beginning of the year that all the nominees in this category… were men! No woman will therefore have the chance to win this prestigious prize in 2023. Last year, it was Adele who left with the trophy in this category.

What do people think?

Some people support the Academy’s decision to combine the men’s and women’s categories. They think that we should no longer divide the categories according to gender, and reward people only according to their talent!

Others wonder if combining the male and female categories into a single category might disadvantage one gender over the other. As we saw above, at the Brit Awards gala, only men were nominated in the “Best Artist” category this year!

Several galas already have gender-neutral categories. This is the case with the Grammys and the MTV Video Music Awards.

And you, do you think it’s a good idea to merge the men’s and women’s categories in the galas?
