The aces of info | A survey of schools, gold hockey players and a rediscovered bird!

Every Sunday, La Presse broadcasts the content of Les As de l’info, a new youth digital platform entirely devoted to daily news.

Have your say on the future of the school!

What do you think of your school ? Do you experience any challenges there because of the shortage of teachers? Is your school in bad shape? Would you need to see a specialist without success?

The “Let’s talk about education” project invites all Quebecers of all ages to participate in meetings to talk about what is not going well in schools. These meetings will take place in the spring, in several cities in Quebec. Their goal ? Improving the education environment and getting government moving.

For the young

And since education is about young people, Parlons éducation wants to hear your ideas! An expression and preparation workshop has also been created to help you take part in meetings. The information can be found in the youth section of the “Let’s talk about education” project site.

Among the themes that will be discussed during the meetings, there is the school’s mission. According to you, what should we learn at the ideal school? What should school be for? We will also talk about equity: how could the school be fairer to all students?

The public network in difficulty

In a press conference, Jean Trudelle, the coordinator of Parlons éducation, said that there are many problems in the public education network and that the government is doing nothing to solve these problems.

He is sorry that a large number of students are struggling at school and that the quality of French is declining among students.

This is serious in a society, citizens must be able to read and understand what is happening.

Jean Trudelle, Coordinator of Let’s Talk Education

Democracy at school

Parlons éducation also suggests giving young people more room in school decisions. We want the school to prepare children to become engaged citizens in a democratic society.

Climate crisis, labor shortage, pandemic, ubiquitous technology: the world has changed a lot in recent years. These changes have an influence on the way young people perceive the world, success and school. You certainly don’t see the world like your parents or your grandparents. This is why you have to give your opinion! You can also donate it here! We are interested!

The Canadian team celebrates its victory against the Czech Republic in the final of the World Junior Hockey, on January 5 in Halifax.

Canada won the World Junior Hockey Championship again on January 5th. The team led by Connor Bedard beat the Czech Republic 3-2 in extra time in an exciting final game until the end. Short report of the tournament and the players who stood out.

Canada, an indisputable hockey powerhouse

It is obvious that Canada is among the best (if not THE best) country in the world when it comes to hockey, its national sport. And he demonstrated it once again at the 2023 World Junior Hockey Championship, which took place in Halifax (Nova Scotia) and Moncton (New Brunswick).

The Mondial de hockey junior is a tournament that brings together the best hockey players under the age of 20 from national teams on the planet. It was the 20e time Canada won this competition.

A dazzling journey!

Canada put on a spectacular performance at the Worlds, winning all but one game they played. His most impressive victory was against Austria, which he beat… 11-0!

His most interesting match, however, was the final against the Czech Republic, as we told you above. Canada led 2-0 at the end of the second period thanks to goals from Dylan Guenther and Shane Wright. However, Czechia fought back in the third period with a goal from Jiri Kulich and another from Jakub Kos, making it 2-2 and forcing extra time.

It was finally Dylan Guenther who decided with his second goal of the evening during a two-on-one breakaway, giving his team the victory. The celebrations quickly followed on the ice rink!

golden players

Several Canadian players stood out during the tournament. Connor Bedard, 17 and a native of British Columbia, led his opponents with 9 goals and 14 assists (23 points) in 7 games, which earned him the title of best player at the World Junior Hockey Championship. Many people believe he will be picked first overall in the upcoming National Hockey League (NHL) draft. Montreal fans obviously dream that he plays for the Canadiens.

For his part, Joshua Roy, 19 years old and born in Saint-Georges, Quebec, had 5 goals and 5 assists (10 points). It was he who made the pass to Dylan Guenther on Canada’s decisive goal against the Czech Republic. Joshua Roy was chosen by the Canadiens in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL Draft.

Who knows what new exploits this Canadian junior team will accomplish in the coming years? And you, did you follow the World Junior Hockey? What is your favorite NHL team?

An “extinct” bird is rediscovered after 140 years!

Black-naped Pheasant Pigeon

It’s not every day that you read something like this! A species of bird thought long extinct has been sighted in Papua New Guinea. A great discovery for scientists.

The return of the black-naped pheasant

The bird found is a black-naped pheasant pigeon. Its scientific name is Otidiphaps nobilis insularis. It is a subspecies of the family of Columbidae to which also belong pigeons, doves and doves.

Researchers thought this species had been extinct for a very long time. In fact, the last time she was seen was in 1882!

The American Bird Conservancy, an organization for the protection of wild birds, had put it on its list of critically endangered species. The chances were therefore very slim of ever seeing the black-naped pheasant again.

The Expedition of Patience

Finding the black-naped pheasant was not easy. In 2019, researchers first traveled to Papua New Guinea to try to track down the bird. Unfortunately, the expedition had not borne fruit.

But last September, a new team of scientists returned to Papua New Guinea, to Fergusson Island. The team decided to return after hearing about the bird from local hunters.

After a month of roaming the mountainous island, the researchers met people who confirmed to them that they had seen and heard the bird.

Thanks to the indications of Augustin Grégory, a hunter in the region, the team placed cameras in places where the bird could be found. One of these cameras was at Mount Kilkerran, the highest peak on the island.

Eventually, two days before the researchers left the island, one of the cameras filmed the passage of a black-naped pheasant pigeon in the heights of Mount Kilkerran. You can imagine the amazement of the researchers!

Good news for scientists

The images captured delighted the scientists of the expedition. It was a moment of pure happiness for them. A director of the American Bird Conservancy even said that he had the impression of having “found a unicorn” he was so happy!

The scientific community is now committed to continuing to protect this extremely rare and difficult to observe bird species. This discovery gives a glimmer of hope for the search for extinct animals.

And you, would you like to make a discovery of this kind? Do you think governments are doing enough to protect biodiversity?
