Milan Herms and Sophie Rois in AEIOU – A Quick Alphabet of Lovea film by Nicolette Krebitz, in the running for the Golden Bear

For her third feature film as director, Nicolette Krebitz, best known as an actress in Germany, brings to the screen a screenplay that she signs alone, about a mature actress whose career takes an unusual turn. In AEIOU – A Quick Alphabet of Love, Sophie Rois plays a sixty-year-old actress to whom good roles are now more rarely offered, who reluctantly agrees to give lessons to young people who have to overcome language difficulties. This is particularly the case of Adrian (Milan Hermes), a 17-year-old teenager who happens to be the one who, a short time ago, stole the actress’ bag in the middle of the street. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the film lies in the gradual development of a romantic relationship that defies convention. Trouble is, the director feels compelled to awkwardly take all sorts of avenues to spice up this relationship, including a trip to the French Riviera where the couple then turn into professional larceny. The credibility of the story suffers, to the point where the beautiful original idea is spoiled by these unnecessary detours.

The specialized site Deadline reported on Sunday the number of cases of COVID-19 declared in the screening centers where professionals and journalists go daily to undergo an antigen test. Of more than 2,700 tests taken so far, 54 people have tested positive, a figure which, according to a spokesperson for the Berlinale, remains relatively low. Germany has reported an average of 1,472 cases per 100,000 population in the past week, according to the Robert Koch Institute. Only 55.2% of the German population would have taken advantage of a booster dose. Access to the various Berlinale venues is permitted to suitably vaccinated individuals only, who must also present proof of a negative test result taken on the same day.
