The man who was between life and death following a fight that took place on Thursday evening at Bayonne festivalsdied on the evening of Tuesday, July 16, announced the city’s public prosecutor.

The victim was taken to hospital, where his condition deteriorated, putting his life in danger, according to the prosecution. A suspect was arrested Friday morning, charged and placed in pre-trial detention by the judge of liberties and detention, according to the same source.

The events occurred the day after the launch of the festivities, at a bus station set up for the festivities. According to the account of the accused, a 39-year-old Guadeloupean, the victim, a 58-year-old man and intoxicated (1.87 g of alcohol per liter of blood) allegedly made racist remarks towards him. Heard by investigators, the victim’s partner denied the racist remarks.

Arrested the day after the attack, the accused, who works in a cleaning company, provided evidence which is not “not entirely compatible with video surveillance”noted the prosecutor. “He seems to be saying that following the insults, he primarily wanted to protect himself, whereas the image clearly shows that the victim did not, at any time, attempt to strike.”he stressed.

In 2023, the previous edition of the city’s festivities was marred by the fatal assault of a city-centre resident, who was beaten up after making a remark to a group of young party-goers caught urinating in front of his door. A tribute was paid to him on Wednesday during the opening ceremony of the new edition, whose security measures have been reinforced by the deployment of new video surveillance cameras in the city. Some 900 police and emergency services are also being mobilised, as in previous years.
