The 30th anniversary of the death of three-time Formula 1 (F1) champion Ayrton Senna was marked during a ceremony at the Imola circuit, where he lost his life following an accident that It was produced during the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994.
The president and director of operations of F1, Stefano Domenicali, will be accompanied for the occasion on Wednesday by numerous dignitaries from Brazil and Italy, in addition to a representative from Austria. At the same time, we will highlight the death of F1 driver Roland Ratzenberger, a tragedy which occurred the day before Senna’s death, during the qualifying session.
At 2:17 p.m., a minute’s silence will be observed and flowers will be laid at the Tamburello bend, at the exact time and place where Senna, then aged 34, died after colliding with the concrete guardrail at approximately 300 km/h.
Flowers will also be placed in the Villeneuve bend, located a little further on the circuit, where Ratzenberger, then aged 33, lost his life. Ratzenberger’s father is expected to attend the ceremony.
Senna, a Brazilian driver who won the world championship in 1988, 1990 and 1991, was leading at Imola when he lost control of his car.
Ratzenberger was a rookie in Formula 1 at the time of his death.
These tragedies forced the leaders of the discipline to review the safety of the Imola circuit and in F1. In particular, the straights have been shortened, the run-off zones in dangerous corners have been enlarged and the engine power has been reduced.
