The 2023 Subaru Outback changes its look and becomes more techno

As part of the New York Auto Show, Subaru presents a redesigned 2023 Outback equipped with new technologies.

All trims except the Wilderness added for 2022 sport a new front end that includes a more prominent grille, redesigned LED headlights and fog lights, and a tougher-looking protective bumper trim.

The most obvious change, however, is on the flanks. New contrasting moldings form the bridge between the lower body and the headlights in addition to following the outline of the wheel arches more markedly. These styling cues are sometimes reminiscent of the 2023 Solterra electric SUV, sometimes the next-generation 2022 WRX sports sedan. Is this a good thing? You be the judge.

More security

At the top of the range, the 2023 Outback gets a new wide-angle single camera that works with the dual-camera EyeSight system. This widens the field of vision to detect pedestrians and cyclists, especially at intersections. An LCD digital rear-view mirror incorporating a compass is also added.

Speaking of the EyeSight system, one more function enhances its capabilities, namely emergency steering assistance. This works in concert with the pre-collision braking system to avoid a collision at speeds below 80 km/h.

Inside, the multimedia system with 11.6-inch screen offered in several versions is now compatible wirelessly with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2023 Outback also becomes the first Subaru model to integrate what3words tracking technology into its navigation system. It is a way to get to any place in the world using a unique combination of three words representing a geographical address.

Slight price increases to be expected

The rest is the same recipe. You’ll have the choice between a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine developing 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque, as well as a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine that produces 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft. Each is mated to a continuously variable transmission with a manual mode simulating eight gears, not to mention Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive, but only the second can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

The 2023 Subaru Outback will go on sale in the coming months, but prices are yet to be determined. Expect slight increases from 2022.
