The 2-toed sloth

Lazy

The sloth is a arboreal mammal who lives in South America. At the animal park of Auvergne, they are sloths with 2 claws. Its 2 large claws allow it to grip well everywhere. There are also 3-clawed sloths.

The characteristics of the sloth

The head

He has a particularity in terms of the mobility of the head. He can very well turn his head 270 degrees.thanks to its vertebrae which are 8 or 9 in number.

Hairs

He is very handsome with long hair. Its hairs are home to a whole biodiversity. This means that depending on the dry or wet season, the sloth will be able to change color. Depending on the algae living in his coat, he will be a little greener or a little duller.

The sloth has everything upside down! Clémence, caretaker at the Animal Park of Ardes sur Couze

  • His hair grows from the belly to the back
  • His organs are attached to his rib cage to avoid crashing everything since he is always upside down.

Does the sloth come down from its tree?

Yes, he goes down once a week to relieve himself.

In the animal park of Auvergne, in captivity, sloths sometimes like to go and take possession of the cabin, the armadillos on the ground. They will therefore go down a little more often, but just to go to bed.

The atmosphere at home

The sloths share their home with 2 3-banded armadillos and 3 pinched tamarins. The latter, small monkeys with a pretty white mane, like to tease our sloths. But given the speed of the sloths, the tamarins are already far away when they decide to react!

To meet Juna and Elmo, the 2 2 clawed sloth from the park, go to house number 9, and look for them in the trees.
