Thailand | Tens of thousands of people affected by bad weather

(Bangkok) Tens of thousands of people in Thailand have been affected by flooding caused by heavy rains in the far south of the country, authorities said on Monday.

At least a dozen schools in Yala and Narathiwat provinces have had to close, and some roads and railway lines have been cut.

Images taken in the remote area show homes and shops flooded by brownish water and residents taking shelter on upper floors.

Heavy rains have also caused damage at sea, with at least seven boats sunk in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea since Friday.

The kingdom’s national railway said the subsidence of the tracks meant trains heading towards the Malaysian border were stopping in the town of Yala, 100km further north.

The authorities have warned the populations of these provinces to be ready to evacuate in the event of worsening flooding.
