Tetê, first recruit from the conflict in Ukraine and big blow for OL

Olympique Lyonnais formalized, Thursday, March 31, the arrival of Mateus Cardoso Lemos Martins, better known as Tetê, until the end of the season. The 22-year-old Brazilian striker previously played with Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk. He is the first player to sign with a French club following the LFP’s decision of March 17 to authorize French clubs to welcome, exceptionally, players who played in the Ukrainian or Russian championships before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

An international U23 player with Brazil, Tetê is part of this promising generation knocking on the doors of the national team. The winger made all his classes in the Brazilian club Gremio, where he revealed himself in 2018 alongside Arthur, player of Juventus, or Leo Jardim, goalkeeper of Losc. Transferred to Shakhtar in February 2019 for 15 million euros, Tetê has gained stature in the Ukrainian club, in the league, but also in the Champions League and Europa League, competitions in which he played 27 games.

Olympique Lyonnais therefore offers the services of a young player in the making, who has a good experience of European football. This year, the Brazilian was already having his best season in accounting terms with 9 goals and an assist in 17 league games, while there were still 12 games to play.

The arrival of the native of Alvorada will allow Olympique Lyonnais to strengthen in an offensive sector already well endowed. As a right winger, Tetê will be in competition with Romain Faivre, who arrived during the winter transfer window in the Rhone club. If the French has a more technical and altruistic profile, the Brazilian is a player capable of making the difference by his speed and his realism in the opposing area.

This arrival brings depth to the Lyon workforce, qualified for the quarter-finals of the Europa League against West Ham, and which has still not given up the idea of qualifying for the European Cup, despite a 10th position nine games from the end of the Ligue 1 season. The presence of Brazilian players (Paqueta, Thiago Mendes, Henrique, Emerson) will facilitate his adaptation within the club.
