In the National League, the accolade went to Buck Showalter of the New York Mets.

Driver of the Central Section champions, Francona received 17 of 30 first-place votes and nine second-place votes.

He totaled 112 points in the poll conducted with Baseball Writers of America.

“It should be seen as an honor for the whole organization,” Francona said. I’m mostly happy with what it means about our organization. »

Second place went to Brandon Hyde of the Baltimore Orioles, who won 31 more games than in 2021. He collected 79 points.

Scott Servais of the Seattle Mariners finished third, including a first-place vote.

The Mariners made the playoffs for the first time since 2001.

Dusty Baker of the Houston Astros finished fourth, one spot ahead of Aaron Boone of the New York Yankees.

Francona won the World Series in 2004 and 2007, each time at the helm of the Boston Red Sox.

This year, Cleveland swept Tampa Bay in the first round, before losing in five games to the Yankees.

Serious health issues led Francona to leave the club for periods in 2020 and 2021.

The 63-year-old said he drew energy from his young training. No less than 17 Guardians players have made their major league debuts this season.

He intends to return to the post in 2023 and if he has to spend time away, the Guardians see no problem.

The poll was conducted before the playoffs.

In the Nationals, the other finalists were Dave Roberts of the Dodgers and Brian Snitker of the Braves.

Showalter was also Manager of the Year in 1994 (Yankees), 2004 (Texas) and 2014 (Baltimore).

“Baseball has changed but in many ways it’s also stayed the same,” said Showalter, 66.

Only two other managers have been honored four times as Manager of the Year: Bobby Cox and Tony La Russa, both Hall of Famers.

This year, the Mets won 101 games during the regular season before losing in three games in the first round, against the San Diego Padres.

Showalter got eight first-place votes and 10 second-place votes, fetching 77 points.

Roberts received eight first-place votes and four second-place votes, for 57 points.

Snitker got seven first-place votes and 55 points.
