Terrorism-related offences: Ottawa resident arrested

A young person from Ottawa was arrested Friday and charged with terrorism-related offenses.

The arrest was carried out by the Federal Police Integrated National Security Team of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Ottawa, with the collaboration and support of the Ottawa Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police , the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and other national security partners, the RCMP announced Saturday.

This person is accused of having “facilitated a terrorist activity by communicating instructional documents concerning an explosive substance” and of having “knowingly instructed, directly or indirectly, a person to engage in a terrorist activity against Jewish persons” , according to the press release.

Since June 2023, the RCMP have arrested five young people for terrorism-related offenses.

No other information regarding the person arrested was released in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the RCMP recalled.

Overcome hatred

On the X platform (formerly Twitter), the leader of the official opposition in Ottawa, Pierre Poilievre, felt that awareness was needed.

“The alleged terrorist plot targeting Jews in Ottawa should make us aware of the horrific rise in anti-Semitism since Hamas’ genocidal attack on Israel on October 7,” he wrote. We must redouble our efforts to protect our communities and defeat anti-Jewish hatred.”

For his part, Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe was “shocked” by the event. He also praised the investigative work of the RCMP.

“I was shocked to learn the details of a planned attack against the Jewish community in Ottawa,” said the mayor. There has been a rise in anti-Semitism in Ottawa in recent weeks.”

“The Ottawa Police Service will continue to patrol synagogues and other Jewish institutions,” he added. There is no place for hatred, racism or violence in our community.”
