Pyrénées-Orientales: a TER derails, five injured

A TER train from Perpignan to Villefranche-Vernet-les-Bains derailed in the Pyrénées-Orientales department on Wednesday, July 24. Several people were injured.

Seen from the sky, the front of the regional train appears to be dislocated. A TER derailed in Eus (Pyrénées-Orientales) on Wednesday, July 24, due to a mudslide, causing five minor injuries, including the driver. Nine people were on board at 6:30 a.m. “It’s really impressive, at the time, it’s stressful because we don’t know if there are any injured, if there are any dead.”confides Alexandre Torra, a breeder who witnessed the accident. With his partner Aurore, they rushed to help the passengers before the firefighters arrived: “We broke the window, and my husband, meanwhile, was busy calling for help.”explains the latter.

An investigation is underway to determine the origin of this mudslide. “exceptional”the prefecture said in its press release. The prefecture indicates that “major works are to be expected”. The train notably hit the pier of a bridge, and “totally fractured”, explained Alexandre Torra to France Bleu Roussillon. In the meantime, traffic is interrupted “until further notice” on both tracks and the SNCF is establishing a transport plan to allow users of the line to continue to travel.
