After long discussions, the leaders of the European Union reached a minimum agreement to contain energy prices, on the night of Thursday 20 to Friday 21 October, in Brussels, Belgium.
On the night of Thursday 20 to Friday 21 October, smiles were de rigueur in Brussels (Belgium). But, as often, between the 27 member countries of the European Union (EU)the discussions turned at the marathon. Alone against almost everyone, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz does not want to cap energy prices. However, after eleven hours of negotiations, President Emmanuel Macron shows his satisfaction. “The fact that we have reached an agreement sends a very clear signal to the market of our determination and our unity”declares the French head of state.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Olaf Scholz has been accused of going it alone. Germany, very dependent on Russian gas, is increasing partnerships with other suppliers, such as Norway, the United States or the Persian Gulf. Since its industry has a vital need for gas, Germany is ready to pay a high price, even if it means weakening the other members of the EU. Emmanuel Macron and the German Chancellor are to meet on Wednesday, October 26, in Paris, to display a unity that has been undermined in recent weeks.
