While the vote on the independence of New Caledonia will be held on Sunday, December 12, strong tensions remain between loyalists and separatists. The special envoy of France Télévisions, Hugo Capelli, explains the situation on the archipelago.
To avoid a possible escalation of tensions, nearly 1,600 gendarmes, 100 police officers, 200 soldiers with important equipment such as helicopters were sent to New Caledonia from the metropolis. Due to the health context, the separatists called on their supporters not to vote in the independence ballot on Sunday, December 12. The latter will not recognize the result of the referendum. However, they want this to take place in peace and call for not blocking the polling stations.
While the Minister of Overseas Territories, Sébastien Lecornu, arrived in Noumea to discuss the future of the archipelago after the election results, the separatists see this as a final provocation. The divisions between separatists and anti-separatists are still strong on the archipelago at least two days before the poll.
