Title 42, a regulation that prevented the United States from sanctioning would-be immigrants, expired Friday, May 12 at midnight. Hundreds of migrants have previously rushed to the border.

On one side, migrants try to cross the border by swimming across the Rio Grande in the middle of the night, on the other, American guards who try to dissuade them. For the past few days, the border between the United States and Mexico has seen a rare influx due to the modification of a rule: Title 42. It was a special regulation during the pandemic that allowed for simpler expulsions, but not penalties for applicants for immigration.

28,000 American agents mobilized

“If anyone arrives at our southern border after midnight tonight, they will be deemed ineligible for asylum and will be subject to harsher consequences for illegal entry”explains Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States.

Since this Friday, May 12, candidates must make an appointment with the American authorities via a telephone application, before presenting themselves at the border. They also risk not being able to reapply for asylum for five years and risk criminal prosecution. The country has mobilized 28,000 officers and soldiers to monitor the border these days.
