Tensions and scuffles took place on Wednesday evening in several cities in France the day after the death of Nahel, a 17-year-old young man killed by a police officer after refusing to comply in Nanterre.

In the Mirail district of Toulouse (Haute-Garonne), a large fire, caused by trash fires, notably started around 7 p.m., reports France Bleu Occitanie. The very dense cloud of smoke is visible from downtown Toulouse, according to a journalist from France Bleu Occitanie. At least three cars were burned. About fifty people had gathered around 6 p.m. in the neighborhood, before the situation tensed around 7 p.m.

The firefighters at the Toulouse-Carsalade barracks were stoned during their intervention, as were the police present on the spot, the firefighters told France Bleu Occitanie. Many police forces are mobilized, including CRS, who used tear gas. Two metro stations, Reynerie and Bellefontaine, are not served on Wednesday evening, for an indefinite period. The Mirail – Université station was closed in the early evening before being reopened at 8:30 p.m.

Eleven people arrested in Île-de-France

In Lille (North), tensions also erupted in the evening, learned Agence Radio France from a police source. The police were stoned by demonstrators who had gathered in front of the prefecture. The Nord prefecture tells France Bleu Nord that two people were arrested, in particular for trash fires. There were no injuries.

In Paris and in the inner suburbs (Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-de-Marne), eleven people were arrested in various spontaneous demonstrations, Agence Radio France learned at 9:50 p.m. from the prefecture of Paris police.
