There were 250,000 people demonstrating against the far right on Saturday June 15, according to the Ministry of the Interior, almost everywhere in France. All expressed their concerns about the possibility of seeing the National Rally come to power.
In the streets of the capital, tens of thousands of people responded to the call against the National Rally. Political figures display the unity of the New Popular Front, but it is the unions who lead the procession. The CFDT calls for a barrier. In the crowd, demonstrators spoke of the need to come together, but also of their concern. “I remember 2002 very well. (…) For 20 years, we have the impression of having demonized this party which remains the same in reality”denounces a demonstrator.
Across France, in 182 cities, demonstrations brought together 640,000 people according to the CGT, 250,000 according to the police. It wasn’t just people who were regulars at the demonstrations. In Bordeaux (Gironde), the New Popular Front tests its slogans in the street. In the procession, we find all the components of the left. In Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), young people but also those who have the memory of the far right in power. During this day of mobilization, we deplored some damage in Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine) or tensions with the police as in Nantes (Loire-Atlantique) and Paris.
