Félix Auger-Aliassime pulled out his Sunday tennis to beat Daniil Medvedev, the world’s fifth-ranked player, in the third round of the Paris Olympic tournament. The Quebecer thus reached the quarter-finals at the Roland-Garros venue.
Auger-Aliassime, ranked 19e in the world, beat the Russian in two sets of 6-3 and 7-6 (5). Medvedev is playing under the banner of independent athletes at the Paris Olympics.
At 4-3 in the first set, play was suspended due to rain at Roland-Garros. Upon return to play, about thirty minutes later, FAA won the break, then the set.
The second round was very well shared. The tiebreaker as well.
Auger-Aliassime had never won a match against Medvedev, who had a 7-0 lead before this Olympic encounter.
He will face in the next round the winner of the match between Casper Ruud and Francisco Cerúndolo, which will take place later on Wednesday.
