(Washington) Tornadoes and severe weather struck the US state of Tennessee on Saturday and killed at least six people, seriously damaging homes and causing power outages, according to authorities.
Three of the deaths occurred in the northern suburbs of Nashville, capital of this state in the southeastern United States.
The Nashville Office of Emergency Management posted photos on social media showing uprooted trees and destroyed homes.
“Unfortunately, we can confirm that there have been three deaths as a result of severe weather on Nesbitt Lane,” the office said on X.
A tornado touched down in Clarksville, in the northern part of the state, also causing casualties.
“We can confirm that three people have died, two adults and one child,” Montgomery County authorities said in a statement, adding that “23 people were treated at the hospital.”
The first rescue teams are “still in the search and rescue phase (following) this disaster”, they said, asking residents not to venture onto the roads.
Some 86,000 households have also reported power outages in the state, according to the specialist site PowerOutage.us.
